Online Banking Session Phishing Attack via Pop up - 1/21/2009

Online Banking Session Phishing Attack via Phony Popup Messages This new variation of phishing attack, called “in-session phishing,” targets online banking sessions through a popup window posing as a legitimate message from the bank. When a customer visits the online banking site and attempts to log into their account, they are instantly prompted by a pop-up window asking the victim to retype their username and password for the site since their session has expired. If the user enters their credentials in the phony popup, the phisher then steals the login information. Since this is a browser based attack, the best way to defend against it is to teach awareness to banking end users. A few best practices in browser security include: 1. Users should be suspicious of unprompted pop up windows that appear without clicking on a hyperlink. 2. Deploy browser security tools and set security settings to disallow popups and certain scripts from running. 3. Users should always log out of banking and other sensitive online apps and accounts before going to other Websites so sessions do not remain active. PeUnited Community Bank is currently aware of the phishing attacks and is monitoring any new developments. If you have any questions about this phishing attack threat, please call United Community Bank at (218) 346-5700 and ask for Angie, Nikki or Sandra.

"Vishing" Scam - 12/1/2008

We have recently been made aware that several of our customers (card holders and non-card holders) have received a computer automated message telling them that United Community Bank Security Department is contacting them to tell them that their card has been suspended. They are then prompted to call the following phone number (302) 286-5252 and enter their sixteen digit card number to “release the suspension” of their card. Please be advised that we DO NOT at this point in time have this type of Fraud monitoring, and these calls are NOT coming from United Community Bank. The sole purpose of these "Vishing" calls are to obtain the customer’s card number to use it fraudulently! If you have any questions, please contact a United Community Bank representative.
